The Church At Redstone
Mission: To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known
March 7th
Many of you watched at least some of the Winter Olympics. There were numerous competitors from right here in our region so many of us felt a special connection to the games this year. Most of you know, of course, that the Olympic heritage goes back all the way to 776 BC in Athens. What you may not know is that in addition to the competitions held at Athens every 4 years, there was a similar event called the "Isthmian Games" held every two years at Corinth. Do you think Paul might have used that "world famous" event based in Corinth as a metaphor when we wrote to that church? Take a look at I Corinthains 9:24-27 where Paul asks what was certainly a rhetorical question for his readers, "Don't you know that everyone who competes in 'the games' goes into strict training?" Given the history of the Isthmian Games, there's a real depth of meaning in passage we'll look at this week. Given the difficulty of the race that we are each called to run, it's also a very relevant and a very challenging passage to each of us! This is a Sunday when we will honor Christ's sacrifice for us by taking communion together around the table in the center. Are there a couple of volunteers to bring bread for that occasion? On Wednesdays we are offering an after school program and can use 1-2 volunteer helpers per week. Let me know if you can help...or just show up! The next Elders meeting will be Tuesday March 9 at 7 p.m. at the church. Bruce

This Sunday we will start a series from I Corinthians. My focus in this series is to look at some of the main metaphors Paul uses in that book. Our life with God is inner and unseen, so to talk about it, we have to resort to comparisons with visible things. As we dig into the various illustrations Paul gives for the spiritual life, I think we will gain new insights and enthusiasm about our relationship with God. This week the text is I Corinthians 3:1-9. Usually each Sunday I will concentrate on one metaphor, but Paul uses three in this short passage. He talks about a baby who is in the process of changing from baby food to regular food, a seed that is planted and grows into a plant, and a building that is being constructed. You can see that all three of those images are about growth and development. If we are truly connected with God, then we will see signs that we are being changed. The Daily Bread devotional booklets for March-May are available now at the church. This Saturday evening we'll have another "full moon cross country ski and snowshoe" event. Meet at the top of McClure Pass at 6:30 p.m. Dress warmly and bring a flashlight or headlamp in case of cloudy conditions. Finally, I would like to have us make a short video as a way to convey our words of hope and encouragement to Cheri Potter. If you have a video camera and are willing to work on this project, please let me know. Bruce

I want to thank Randy and PJ Melton for giving our group free access to their Nordic area behind the coke ovens after church last Sunday. Our group of kids and adults had a great time with our own "Redstone Winter Olympics." This Sunday we will have part one of an occasional series called "My Journey With God" that will happen six times during the year. My purpose is for us to hear real life accounts from people who belong to or have a connection to this congregation, telling us how God is currently real and active in their lives. This Sunday we will hear from a couple who were active in this congregation until they moved to Aspen a few years ago. John and Annette Laverman now attend Crossroads Church in Aspen, and last fall they had a life-changing experience with God by way of a missions trip to Africa. I believe your faith will be encouraged by hearing their story. Also this Sunday Pete Schaffner of Youth For Christ will be here to provide training for people interested in working with youth. This will happen after the church service, and you are invited to participate. The Elders will meet this Sunday evening at 7:00 at the church. You are welcome to attend, or to contact one of the Elders with any ideas or concerns you have. Keep in mind that our kids from Marble Charter School have a box in the entryway collecting supplies for Haiti. Also, Joyce Yoder will be working on a new church directory. Please let her know if you are not currently in the directory or if you have changes in your information. You can rech her at 945-5836, or rjyode@comcast.net Bruce

This Sunday I will begin a series of messages from the book of First Corinthians. Because this Sunday is also Valentine's Day, I will begin this series with chapter 13, which is called "the love chapter" and is one of the best known passages of the Bible. It is an almost poetic tribute to the significance, qualities, and durability of God's kind of love. We'll be doing a fun event after the service. If you can, bring your snowshoes or cross country skis and a snack. After church we'll go across the highway to the "new this year" nordic area behind the coke ovens. It only takes about 45 minutes to cover the whole course there, so it will be a short but fun activity with a group of people you know. Some of the young people in our church who are students at Marble Charter School are collecting supplies for Haiti. They have placed a box in our entryway, and they encourage you to bring items such as these to donate: hand sanitizer, sterile gloves, antibioticointment, diapers, baby bottles, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. Two special things on Sunday, February 21... First, Pete Shaffner of Youth For Christ will be here to do a training session for people who have an interest in working with youth. This event will happen after the worship service on Feb. 21. There will be a lunch, and then a training session for a couple of hours. Please consider attending. Second, during 2010 I have designated six Sundays with the theme "My Journey with God." During the service on those Sundays, current or former members of the Church at Redstone will give us a glimpse into their journey of walking with God. To start this series, John and Annette Laverman will be here on February 21. They will talk about the role this congregation had a critical period in their lives, and they will also talk about the life-changing experience they had on a recent short term missions trip. Finally, one year ago we made available audio Bibles in various formats. We still have a few of those left, and I will have some on the shelves at the back this Sunday. If you can use one, or know someone who can, please take one. Bruce

Congregation, This Sunday we will finish the series from the Sermon on the Mount on Timeless Truth for Troubled Times. The conclusion Jesus gives to that message is in Matthew 7:24-27 and it is about building our house on the rock. In keeping with the "Rock and Ice" theme of Redstone Winter Fest this weekend, along with talking about the Rock I'm going to include some comments about the images of Ice in the Bible. This is a Sunday when we celebrate communion together. We'll have the table in the center with a variety of bread...if you can bring some homemade bread to share we would appreciate that - please let me know. The following Sunday is Valentine's Day. I'll be starting a series from the book of I Corinthians, and the message that Sunday will be about love from I Corinthians 13. After church, we have an agreement with Avalanche Outfitters to use their new cross country ski and snowshoe course. Just let me know in advance and I'll get it set up. This first year they do not have equipment to rent, however the General Store does have some snowshoes available to rent.
