Topic for Activity, Thought & Prayer
Sunday, July 6th
Congregation,
Please keep in mind the following special events…
Friday we’ll have our annual hot dog stand in front of the church. Stop by and help for a while if you can! The stand opens about 11 a.m., and the parade is at noon.
Friday, July 4 we’ll have our annual hot dog stand in front of the church in connection with the Redstone parade. It’s a great day in Redstone with other special activities going on in town. Come and help for a while with the stand if you can! We start setting it up about 9:30 am, and it opens around 10:30.
Sunday, July 6 I will be speaking as part two of a four sermon series on what it means to be a godly man. Then after the worship service we’ll have a wonderful event on the back lawn to dedicate the new gazebo. It is in memory of Bob Perry, and was purchased with the money from his memorial fund. We’ll dedicate it in style with two Bluegrass/Gospel bands, Second Wind and Southwind. You will enjoy these folks and their music! They’ll both be playing for our worship indoors at 9 am, and then starting an outdoor concert on our back lawn at 11 am. We’ll have the big canopy set up for shade, and we’ll have the BBQ grills going with hamburgers and hotdogs. Bring a salad or dessert to share, and we’ll have a great time together
June 29th
Congregation,
This Sunday we will read and discuss the final chapter of I Thessalonians. That chapter starts with further details about the future return of Christ, and then goes on to succinct but wide-ranging list of commands about how we are to live as followers of Christ. Near the end Paul gives a wonderful prayer asking God’s help for us to live the pure life that God has called us to.
The following Sunday (June 29) will be the beginning of a four week series about what it means to be a godly man. If you are wondering whether we also going to do a series about what it means to be a godly woman, the answer is yes. You can watch for that godly woman series to be on the schedule in the future. Anyway, for this series, you will have the opportunity to hear not just from me, but also from three other men in the congregation about what being a “man of God” means to them. The first presentation will be on June 29 by Shawn Phinney. I will be speaking on July 6, and then Dr. Louis McBurney and Dr. Alan Nelson will finish out the series on the following two weeks.
Other notes about coming events…
We’ve been trying to organize a church campout, but those plans have once again been delayed. We have learned that McClure Pass campground is still closed, and may not open until late in July. We will make another effort to schedule a group camping trip sometime in August.
We will have our annual Fourth of July hot dog stand at the church in connection with the Redstone parade and other festivities in town. Helpers are needed on the morning of Friday the 4th to set up the stand, and to help operate it. We provide the hot dogs and other things on a donation basis, and we give the proceeds to the Redstone Community Association as a way for our church to support community events and improvements in Redstone.
On that Sunday of the 4th of July weekend (July 6) some exciting winds will be blowing through Redstone. We have not one, but two bands coming that day: SouthWind and Second Wind. They will do music for our Sunday worship at 9 am, then will continue with a back lawn concert around 11, and we’ll have a pot luck picnic lunch at noon. Both of these bands play a variety of styles, but primarily bluegrass and gospel music. SouthWind is Gary and Suzie Solomon who were also here in July last year, so you may remember them. Second Wind is a family band, made up of mom and dad and their teenage son and daughter. They are from the Pueblo area, but play music all around the state. This will be a wonderful event, so don’t miss it!
Finally, keep in mind that next Sunday, June 29, is our church picnic after the worship service at the Merediths. Bring some food to share, and come have a good time with others from the congregation.
June 15th
This Sunday is Father’s Day, and a good time for us to remember and honor both our human father and also our heavenly Father.
We continue this week with chapter four in our short trip through the book of I Thessalonians. Chapter four begins with the word “finally.” But that does not really mean “in conclusion” as we might think. Rather, it is a term Paul usually puts right near the middle of his letters. It indicates a shift from talking about what God has done for us to a very practical application section where Paul talks about what we are to do in response to what God has done for us. The second half is usually filled with verbs in the imperative, or commands. And the last two chapters in this book certainly follow that pattern. If you go through and mark all of the places in those two chapters where Paul gives a direct command about how Christians are to live, you will have almost every verse marked!
In the beginning of chapter four he talks about sexual purity, brotherly love, and being a hard worker. Then he goes on in the second half of chapter four and the first half of chapter five to talk about the return of Christ and what God has planned for the future. We will give our attention to chapter four this Sunday, to understand what God is saying to us there, and to apply it to our lives.
The river rafting trip that was being considered for June 22 is being delayed until later in the summer.
The church picnic is planned for Sunday, June 29.
June 1st.
We are now on our summer schedule, and worship is at 9 a.m.
For several weeks we are devoting ourselves to study and discern God’s truth from the book of I Thessalonians. It was written to one group of Christians in a specific situation, but we understand it to be God’s Word with timeless truth for all Christians. During this study we are engaging in some interactive dialogue during the worship service so that you can share your insights or your questions about the passage for that week.
This Sunday our focus is on chapter 2. In that passage Paul describes in some detail his motives and methods for presenting the Good News about Christ in Thessalonica. His words give us some insight not only into Paul’s individual Christian lifestyle, but also into the nature of the Gospel. It is a clear indication that we can’t separate the message from the messenger. The message is about God’s power to change lives, so if the Gospel is truly being presented then that life changing power has to be seen both in the one presenting the message and in the lives of those receiving it.
Finally, one note about an event to put on your calendar. On Sunday, June 29, we will have a picnic after the worship service. The picnic will be held at Paige and Margie Meredith’s place. There will be an opportunity for people to be baptized in the lake there as an expression of commitment to Christ – if you haven’t made that public step of identification with Christ, please talk to me about it.
